Bordeaux, World Heritage

Nestled amidst its famed vineyards and bounded by forest, ocean and river valleys, Bordeaux, surely one of the worlds most elegant of cities, welcomes you. Awarded UNESCO “World Heritage City” status in 2007 for its outstanding urban and architectural ensemble, Bordeaux lies like a crescent moon astride the banks of the Garonne . Riverside quays that once bustled with boats and barrels shipping Bordeaux wines far and wide today offer splendid waterside promenades amongst well tended gardens and paths.

Lovers of fine architecture will not be disappointed. The city fathers have scrupulously protected and restored the grand seventeenth century stone buildings that dominate the entire river frontage. Indeed, the whole city is an historical and architectural gem; today mostly traffic free thanks to a modern and quiet tramway.

Food for thought: With its long cultural heritage, Bordeaux is a city of galleries and museums for all tastes. Art galleries, from classical to the decorative arts and the “avant-garde” are to be found and enjoyed all across the city. And if gastronomy is your thing then let yourself be tempted by the specialities of this region:- The foie gras (of course!), Bordeaux cèpes, lamprey  à la Bordelaise, Oysters from the Arcachon Basin, Bazas beef, Pauillac lamb and the sweet seductive cannelés and macarons.

You heard it on the grapevine:  Ah yes, those world-renowned Bordeaux wines. Blissful whites or reds, historic clarets, sweet perfumed Sauternes, noble St Emilions, subtle Medocs, characterful Pessac Léognan – all there to be tried and tasted.
